Relaxation Techniques for Children
Monday, October 3rd, 2011Relaxation takes the mind away from tensions and stress. It allows for the body and mind to loosen up and come to a state balance where heart rate, breathing and blood pressure are at normal levels. Relaxation is beneficial for health. Traditionally, stressful situations have been associated with work, family, household responsibilities and such. This meant that only adults could only benefit from relaxation techniques. However, newer notions suggest that even kids go through stressful situations in school and social scenarios. Even separation from the familiarity of home and family can add stress the mind of a child. Relaxation techniques for children are as equally important especially in kids with special needs such as those afflicted with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. ADHD Remedies include such techniques in order to provide optimal management.
One of the time tested techniques that even kids can adapt are breathing exercises. Calm, rhythmic and deep breaths allow for elevated heart rates to decrease. The best way to do this would be to allow the child to take a deep breath, hold it in for a few seconds and release it. Furthermore, the rhythmic pattern allows for improved focus which is a plus for kids with ADHD.
Progressive muscle relaxation is a good way for promoting relaxation. When the kid has become too tense, ask him to focus on some muscles in the body. Allow him to contract and relax these muscles alternately. Stretching the limbs and muscles can help achieve this. Once the child is physically relaxed, his mind is taken away from the stress and anxiety.
Visualization techniques are especially beneficial for children given their vivid imaginations. Guided imagery where the parent leads the child into picturing positive scenarios helps to promote relaxation. Guided imagery is even quite effective for those afflicted with pain since this also helps in releasing pain relieving chemicals. Once a kid’s imagination is in a pleasant scene, relaxation becomes quite easy.
